LACUNY Institute 2024

Code of Conduct

The Library Association of CUNY strives to support an open exchange of ideas within a respectful and inclusive environment. The Association is dedicated to providing a positive experience for all participants at LACUNY events. To that end, participants are expected to remain mindful of and take responsibility for their speech and behavior to foster a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone.

Participants at meetings and events should be respectful at all times. This includes acknowledging personal biases, actively listening to others, not dominating discussions, and respecting physical and emotional boundaries. The Association welcomes conversations that engage with difficult topics or touch upon polemical issues that intersect with our work in libraries. However, participants are expected to exercise tolerance of the perspectives and opinions of those present. Discriminatory language and imagery is not appropriate at any LACUNY event or meeting.

LACUNY events are sometimes recorded and photographed and by attending meetings and events, participants acknowledge that they may be photographed. The Association acknowledges, respects, and will try to accommodate all reasonable requests for privacy. Event participants should use discretion and respect others when taking photographs, recording events, and sharing images, videos, or information about other participants on social media platforms. LACUNY event organizers should give presenters the opportunity to designate whether their presentations may be shared publicly and in what venue.

Harassment in any form at LACUNY meetings and event will not be tolerated. Harassment can include but is not limited to unwelcome or offensive verbal comments or nonverbal expressions related to: age; appearance or body size; employment or military status; ethnicity; gender identity or expression; individual lifestyles; marital status; national origin; physical or cognitive ability; political affiliation; sexual orientation; race; or religion. Harassment can also include use of sexual and/or discriminatory images in public spaces (including online); deliberate intimidation; stalking; following; harassing photography or recording; sustained disruption of talks or other events; bullying behavior; inappropriate physical contact; and unwelcome sexual attention.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, LACUNY may take any action it deems appropriate, including warning the offender or barring the offender from the event or future LACUNY events. Participants asked to stop a hostile or harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. If you are being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a LACUNY event organizer. Event organizers will assist participants by contacting building/venue security or local law enforcement, or otherwise helping assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the event.

LACUNY welcomes your presence and constructive participation in LACUNY events and thanks you for your attention to the comfort and safety of all attendees.
